How can I Read/Modify BootCD\SMS\Data\Variables.dat

$

0

Is there a way to directly read and edit the variable/value pairs in the Variables.dat file on the ConfigMgr generated Boot Media? I will probably just end up generating a new one. But it seems silly. I make a lot of edits to my Boot CD after I generate it. And if I have to add drivers to the boot wim, I would rather just inject a copy into my existing ISO. But then the "_SMSTSBootMediaSourceVersion" is out of sync with the version on the server, so it downloads the boot image everytime I use the CD, even though it is already booted to the exact same wim. If I could just update the version in the dat file, it would be fine. This is not the only time/reason I would like to modify this dat file. It is just the most recent.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

PXE boot now requires F12 intervention

I have been using SCCM  in testing for about a month.
Everything has been going fine up until the other day.
When i send Images to machines via Task Sequence the machine boots into PXE, but before it goes in it requires users to press F12 to enter the network service boot.

I haven't changed anything for this to start appearing
Is there anything that has happened, or something i can do to change this, as it defeats the whole remote deployment concept.

Cheers

SCCM Restart Task fails if client has SUBST-ituted drive

Hello!

We have a problem - whenever we try to run task sequences which include a "restart computer" task (the default one), it fails. The apparent reason is our clients have a virtual drive "S:" mapped with the SUBST.EXE command. The SMSTS.LOG is clear on this:

Failed to convert S: to unique volume id. Code : 0x80070005 TSManager 29/04/2010 10.38.30 2208 (0x08A0)
TS::Utility::ConvertPathVolumesToUniqueIDs(), HRESULT=80070005 (e:\nts_sms_fre\sms\client\tasksequence\executionengine\engine.cxx,848) TSManager 29/04/2010 10.38.30 2208 (0x08A0)
Failed to convert protected paths to unqiue ID. Error code 0x80070005 TSManager 29/04/2010 10.38.30 2208 (0x08A0)
Failed to reboot the system. Error 0x(80070005) TSManager 29/04/2010 10.38.30 2208 (0x08A0)

The workaround we're using is to run a SUBST /D command line prior the restart step to make it work, but i was wondering if this is an accepted bug or limit of the software...

Many thanks in advance,

Gabe

Stop task sequence part way, snapshot, then restart later?

$

I've been asked if it's possible for us to modify our existing build (Win 8.1 built with CM12 / MDT 2013 TS) so that we can pause it part way through after the Windows image has been applied and take a 'snapshot' at that point which can then be applied to multiple machines.

The task sequence should then pick up from where it left off.

I'm aware of the pre-stage media and we use that extensively already in sites with poor bandwidth / no local SCCM infrastructure, but what we're looking for here is the ability to restart a partial build on multiple machines.

Has anyone had any experience doing this?

Cheers

SCCM PXE - Works a few times then..........

I have been able to successfully boot a test machine via PXE and install an OS (using the Task Sequencer) but after building the same machine a dozen or so times SCCM stops supplying the machine with the boot WIM.

This is a demo machine and I am using it to show customers SCCM's functionality (hence why i am constantly rebuilding).

The PXE service point produces a status message stating "The SMS PXE Service Point intructed device to boot normally since it has no PXE advertisement assigned."

  • The device exists in a collection which has a TS advertisement assigned
  • The advertisement is configured to "make this TS available to WINPE and PXE"
  • I have attemtped to re-run advertisement

As a workaround I found I either have to delete the machine from the database , or create a new collection and new advertisment for the TS.

The same advertisment works perfectly when run from "run advertised programs"

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any thoughts?

RBA Permission to delete Unknown computer objects from console

Hi!

I want to delegate permissions to delete "unknown" computer objects from SCCM console, that refers to computers that failed OSD on Win PE stage.

I provided "read only analyst" and custom role with collection\delete resource and site\read propertyes enabled.

This is enough to delete any computer object from console, except "unknown".

RBA Viever do not show that objects, so i can only guess which permission is needed or what to modify.

Help with x64 build and capture (W7 SP1) and ZTIWindowsUpdates

$

Hello! I am a bit desperate here... I am running into an issue with build and capture and WSUS through ZTIWindowsUpdates using ConfigMgr 2007 for a W7 Sp1 x64 image.

The last time I was able to create my master x64 image (build and capture W7 SP1 x64) was July 2014. Since then, everytime I try, it doesn't complete, the TS ends prematurely in the WSUS step. I get the common error when a patch requires multiple reboot :

I made sure to exclude all the updates according to this article : https://support.microsoft.com/fr-ca/kb/2894518. My build and capture works perfectly for my x86 image but stopped working since about a year for my x64.

And the funny thing is that if I use my x64 build in July 2014 and I deploy it and run the WSUS step, it works fine, the task sequence finishes correctly and all the upates are being applied. But when I try to do a build and capture, it exits in the WSUS steps even if all the updates that require a reboot are not being installed (confirmed by looking in the log files!)

I have included a link to all the log files in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\CCM\Logs + WindowsUpdates.log and even C:\Windows\Logs\Cbshere. If someone could take a look at it because I really don't understand why I can't apply updates during the B&C step only for x64 even though all updates that cause multiple restarts were removed according to the KB2894518 article...

Thanks a lot for all the input and help you may bring and let me know if some other log files or anything else could be required to help me out troubleshooting !!!

OSD and Time Settings wrong

We set the time correctly in the BIOS, we've set the time correctly on our image,... but immediately when SCCM OSD takes over in PE and starts putting the image down it changes the time to 3 hours ahead??  Even though in our apply network settings it is set for the correct time zone.  The Server(s) that it is getting stuff from and talking to are all in the same room too, so they have the right time?

When the PC is done being built the timezone is correct but the time stays at 3 hours ahead?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Terry

Replacement Systemboard in SCCM Server

Hello,

I have been running SCCM for a while now, but the system board has failed in the SCCM server and will not boot (confirmed by HP).

I have ordered a new system board, arriving today.  My question is, should I just be able to swap out the motherboard, setup the NIC's with correct IP's and off I go again, or will SCCM have a meltdown as it's a new system board?

Thanks in advance

SCCM 2007 Task Sequence Error with 0x8007000e during Software Updates

$

I have SCCM 2007 R3 and currently apply the Client Hotfixes KB2509007 and KB977384.

I have not found this problem until I recently have tried to re-run a Build and Capture of our Windows 7 SP1 x86 image.  I now find at random points I get the following error in the WindowsUpdate.log file:

I have found a substantial amount of similar problems reported by other users which identify this problem to be "not enough storage space" here are a couple of examples: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7e597b44-2586-4063-b6d0-cec48a7c11c7/sccm-2012-task-sequence-failure-0x8007000e?forum=configmanagerosd

http://henkhoogendoorn.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/an-error-occurred-while-starting-task.html

These point out that this also is not fully resolved on SCCM 2012, which is concerning.  I have tried clearing unnecessary and superseded/expired updates but still see this problem.

Can someone suggest any alternative ways to fix this, even a workaround as I simply need to create one WIM file from a Build and Capture?

Stand-alone media - TS fails

Hai,

I've created a standalone media with the TS that we usually run for installing Windows 7 and all our applications. PXE booting, and running this very same TS works perfectly, without returning any errors.

Installing from the DVD though, returns several of these errors in the smsts.log:

Failed to run the action: Install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.
User cancelled installation. (Error: 80070642; Source: Windows) TSManager 24-03-2011 15:06:20 1968 (0x07B0)

I did not cancel the installation.

Any ideas? :-(

Using ImageX to deploy to disk duplication

We have a system whereby they deploy windows 7 to a tablet type device using a bootable USB thumb drive and an ImageX image.  After several technical errors where the wrong image was deployed due to someone using old USB thumb drive I've been tasked with finding a way to do it without the bootable usb drive.   (preface - I've never used ImageX before)

Is there a way to extract the image given the scenario that I have a Windows 7 PC and have a USB drive dock whereby I can put a blank disk in, extract the imageX image to that disk, remove that disk and put it into the tablet and do the next disk/tablet?

I've only found one site with a similar problem (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2352753&SiteID=17) and the solution was to rebuild the SCCM server, which I have done. Yet the issue persists. After working my way through countless issues with SCCM, this seems to be the only obstacle in my way. Here is the situation:

1. I boot the bare metal client system to PXE and the boot image loads

2. The SCCM status messages appear "Windows is starting up..." and then "Preparing Network Connections..."

3. The client machine hangs for a minute or so, then reboots.

I have enabled the command prompt shell in the boot image and can ping the SCCM server and name resolution work fine, so I know it isn't an issue with the network drivers. Below is the log information from the client. Just as an FYI, the Server is running in "Mixed Mode", so I'm not really understanding the why the identification is an issue. As best I can understand the client is requesting information from the server at a certain point and getting a blank reply.
