Combine split images

Hi,

I try to create stand alone media for my task sequence. Since the whole tasksequence is about 9 Gig, I choose CD/DVD set Media Size 8.5 gig. The task sequence meduia wizard will make two separte iso files, about 4.5 gig each. So far so good,

Normally I extract the iso file to my bootable USB disk so I can do the installation from usb. (did this when the sequence was 7 gig large) Since my USB disk is 16gig, I could extract both the iso files to the same USB but this does not work !

In the middle of the installation, the tasksequence will stop and ask to insert the second media to continue. Since this "second media" is also on my USB disk it will not find it and fail.

I cannot use USB flash drive as media type in the wizard since the server has no USB ports.

Is there a way to:

1/tell sccm to NOT ASK for second media but to continue on the current media ?(can i adjust a pointer whitin a file on the iso image ? )

2/ make standalone media iso 's larger then 8.5 gig whithout splitting them ?

3/ fake a USB drive so the server thinks it's writing to USB while it actually writes to a folder on the local disk ?

Thank you

Jeroen

Win XP to Win 7 - Using OSD - Capturing User data from Profiles

Hi All,

I'm having a few issues with capturing users profiles using USMT moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 as part of a task sequence - we use a SMP to save the data but strangely it wont apply the data on Apply state store. The OS deployment works fine but saving user's data and moving it too new PC doesnt seem to apply. I am using Stock requests for the task sequence Find user state storage capture user state etc and like wise at the end apply user state and release user state but doesnt seem to work. Are there any variables that need to be added to get this working or am i missing something stupid? We do use same PC to image and have mentioned about hardlinking but powers that be want to use SMP. How would this work also if when using Computer association(due to the Windows 7 pc not being setup yet)?

Apologies if im missing something simple

Error in my USB image Drive

Dears

we have a windows 7 image in a USB Key  ,which was decided to deployed it in my environment ,because we want to make a migration from win xp to win 7, and this image was created by using SCCM .

We were requested for this USB key in case of there is any problem by using the SCCM to distribute the image

we face problem with that Key , I mean after we copy all the data which was inside this key and put it in a new Ex-HDD just in case of any problem could happened for that key,  after we made a twice copy we  find the key couldn’t read anymore , and we see all the data inside it has been lost.

So now fortunately we have all the data for that key ( the windows image files)

My question now how can I make a bootable USB Key by using the same data

We try to put these data in Ultra iso and write it as image , made the bootable USB Key , after we boot from that Key and after a two steps

The process was stopped and we have got the below error

so could you please support us by any we to return back the USB boot-able issue.

thanks a lot for any cooperation

PXE-E51: No DHCP or Proxy DHCP offers were received

Ok so I'm new to this and decided hey lets have a go.

I got it all working great and then all of a sudden after a server reboot I got this:

PXE-E51: No DHCP or Proxy DHCP offers were received

My DHCP,DNS,AD and WDS are all on the same box, I spent hours trawling the net and didn't find the answer to my problem but have stumbled across it although about 10hours wasted for a really simple solution

The cause: seems my WDS side is loading before my DHCP is having chance to establish hense WDS can not talk to DHCP to get the pxe connection going.

What did I find:

If i close the GUI for WDS and open the GUI for DHCP, find my server int he tree and right click then select restart.  wait for this to complete (that's the important part)

Once the above is done open my GUI for WDS and again find the relevant point in the tree, right click and restart

Low and behold my connected laptop is now able to connect to the WDS.

I posted this in hope that it will save someone else a heck of a lot of time (can't promise your issue is the same as mine as there are so many different possibilities.)

When trying to make standalone USB media we get errors we can't get past.

Here is the errors from the log file with some lines before and after the actual error:

This happens on 3 different computers one of which is fresh out of the box.  I have read through all the threads that talk about network shares and the hidden windows 7 drive but none of these solution resolve the issue.

2 of the computers are windows 7 ENT and 1 is windows 8 ENT.  This is a large image an we are using a 32GB Transcend USB 3 flash drive.  Any help would be appreciated.

Stand-alone media, how to domain join & set computername?

Hi

I've created a stand-alone media. The computer is connected to the network.

After the setup, the computer (it is already in a collection in sccm with the correct mac address) won't renamed correctly and won't join in the domain.

What do I need to have the machine staged via stand-alone media have a correct host name and joined in the domain?

Thx for the reply.

Drivers Moving from one package to another?

$

I have had OSD working well for 6 months.....last week things abruptly fell apart when another SCCM administrator started importing new models into the driver catalog. Here is the common structure that we have setup:

The behavior that we are seeing now: After a new model is imported into the drivers node and the drivers are added to a package, all the drivers within the new package that existed in another package are removed. The duplicate drivers only exist in the newly created package.

So, when a new model is imported with duplicate drivers, all the existing packages containing those drivers are essentially broken.

Any help or direction on this would be greatly appreciated. I have deleted the whole driver catalog and started re-importing and re-creating packages but the same behavior occurs.

Devices Randomly not joinging the Domain when OS deployed with Task Sequence

SCCM 2007

Windows 7 Ent.

When deploying OS to devices using SCCM 2007 PC's randomly dont join the domain.

When creating the WIM for the OS deployment i used my admin account to install MS updates etc.

When checking the Netsetup.LOG on succesfully joined machines it seem to try using my account and when it cant it uses the Domain join account.

But on unsuccessful machines it trys my account but doesnt progress further to try the join Domain account.

Can anyone tell me whys this is happening.

Is it because of my admin account ?

Or is there another reason why it fails to run the join Domain part of the TS.

Many thanks.

Getting XML from a Tasksequence via SQL query instead of using WMI

$

Hi,

I`ve got a question about tasksequences in SCCM 2007. I need to generate a report, which shows the softwarepackages of a tasksequence divided per group.

Until now I was only able to generate such a report with a WMI-query by using the class "SMS_TaskSequencePackage" and the method "GetSequence" to get the XML of the tasksequence.

However it is customer requirement to get the data with an SQL query directly from the database instead of using WMI.

The respective column I found in the SCCM-database within the table "dbo.TS_TaskSequence". Its name is "Sequence". Unfortunately the XML is not saved in cleartext within the database, but in the datatype "image". The first characters of the column are always "0x3839313330303030" and there are only numerical values.

Now my question:

How can I convert the values of this column into cleartext, so that the hiding XML becomes viewable? I searched a long time for a solution, but I assume it isnot documented. Could you maybe help with that issue?

Many Thanks!

Alex E.

(I posted some screenshots so you can understand what exactly I mean)

(Powershell-Script to get the sequence per WMI)

Model office collections, package advertisement vs collection query. Process for updating and maintaining application revisions.

$

0

We are deploying windows 7 to our entire enterprise. Aproximately 6000 computers. We are 1/3 done.

>There are two main build types they are: Shared and Dedicated

>>For each department/location we have two collections (shared and dedicated)

Our Model Office structure looks like this:

Model office-

    shared-

         -1st floor

         -2nd floor

    dedicated-

        -1st floor

       -2nd floor

>Advertising programs for all computers to model office collection. Shared/dedicated specific applications are advertised to the shared/dedicated collections respectively and any department/location specific stuff is advertised directly to the individual floor/department collections.

>>We use SCCM to deploy Printers, power settings, all applications

There are some issues with this:

A) Power settings must be by query not by collection association because once a computer is removed from the collection the power settings revert

B) there is no easy way to say computers should be removed from collections based on a schedule (that I know of) and we have about 120 collections so far.

C) App needs repackaged because of a bug. Same version. Package requires Reboot after install. All of the computers deployed with "broke" package are manually fixed therefore we don't want the new package to run on the devices already out in the field. We create a new package and collection for the new program. The only way we can currently integrate the new program would be to remove the old advertisement, add the new advertisement AFTER removing every computer for every collection. That way on a going forward basis the new package is run but all existing deploys are not affected.

This could all be made allot easier if:

- we did printer in AD, and printers were assigned via OU and not SCCM packages and collections

- we used AD for power settings

- we used MSI upgrade codes for packages

>My original idea behind model office was that after the win 7 project we would continue to use it. If you are deploying a computer to an area you could put the computer into one collection vs a dozen and that one collection would provide everything that computer would need for that departments tasks.

>At this point I have allot of senior people who are saying that model office is too complicated and should be disbanded. That it is not condusive to our application upgrade process and packaging process and makes it difficult to report on. I would like to instead of advertising directly to the model office collection use a query to say if it is in the model office collection it is also in the application collection. Assuming we keep the same collections over upgrades and revisions it would work well. However the query method isn't flowing from parent to child (allot like power settings). I don't know if this is specific to SCCM 2007 or not.

>Basically it is my fusteration that our non standard way of packaging and our inability to get the package right the first time is becoming our reason for disbanding a good structure that will have value as we continue to support this huge enviornment.

>What are other people doing in standard enviornments? (we have always been non standard, trying to change that)

>TL:DR My hope is that this can turn into a discussion about the best way to do this. But my initial question is, what can we do better? What seems out of place? What suggestions do you have to make this process better.

!!!!!!!!Thank you for your time and consideration in this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OSD Refresh with Pointsec installed.

Has anyone been able to get WinPE to read a Pointsec encrypted hard drive?  We currently are using SCCM sp1/R2 with MDT.  I am using a TS to grab user files/settings via USMT then the bootmgr is installed and the computer reboots into WinPE.  But since the drive is encrypted the TS fails,  WinPE cannot read the local drive to continue the TS.  The most promising solution I have found (besides decrypting the drive) is using the pointsec filter for WinPE provided in the unsupported Pointsec Resource kit.  However, I currently am unable to get that to work.  Has anyone been able to get this work or at the very least found a work around?

Windows 7 SP1 fails in log, but installed anyways

I'm in the process of testing deployment of Windows 7 SP1 (x86) and (x64) via a software distribution package. Most machines do not get prompted to reboot, but when they do manually restart the service pack configures and it gets installed. The logs say it failed and asset intelligence claims that service pack 1 is not installed even though it is. Details below:

Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Ive tried command line: windows6.1-KB976932-x86.exe /quiet /warnrestart:1800

and windows6.1-KB976932-x86.exe /quiet /promptrestart

Error in log (always this error):

The program for advertisement "NB120115" failed ("NB1000A3" - "Silent Install x64"). A failure exit code of 985603 was returned.
User context: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Possible cause: Systems Management Server (SMS) determines status for each program it executes. If SMS cannot find or correlate any installation status Management Information Format (MIF) files for the program, it uses the program's exit code to determine status. An exit code of 985603 is considered a failure.
Solution: For more information on the exit code, refer to the documentation for the program you are distributing.

The advertisement is download, run locally and set to run as soon as possible. The allowed run time is set to 180 minutes for x86 and 240 for x64. The program can run whether a user is logged in or not.

Any idea why this is happening or ways to improve this?

Thank you.

We have a working OSD environment with x86. So basically the Windows 7 x86 WinPE x86. We are moving to Windows x64, I imported the x64 image and created a package for Windows x64. My question is what do I do with WinPe do I need x64 WinPE. We have MDT 2010 integrated with SCCM do I need to generate new x64 WinPE, if so does anyone have any suggestion on how to do that.

Thanks
